focus dashboard
about this dashboard thing
i wanted a simple dashboard that i could fullscreen on my monitor to help me focus on work!!
i found that most of the reason why i got distracted checking my phone or opening social media was to make sure i wasnt missing news (or earthquake updates, i love seismology), but once i was there id fall down the hole. i made myself a little dashboard so i could still get updates (and the 'satisfaction' of glancing over and seeing whats new every so often), while still being able to focus on my writing.
this is very much a work in progress, so if you somehow found this while i was working on it, AHHHH!! and also sorry lol, itll be ready soon... probably
some info on the functionality
- you can choose which feeds to display at the top, and which work-related stuff to display at the bottom. in theory, anything you choose should (hopefully!!) stick after refreshes and revisits. this isnt 100% tho, so dont leave anything important on the page!!
- the feeds at the top include both 'updating' things, like news & earthquake tracking, as well as 'calmer' stuff and still images, so if you dont want any distractions at all, you can effectively turn those off by switching to something static.
- the clock can be adjusted to your timezone with the +/- buttons (it just offsets the hour atm). you can also use the stopwatch to track your work time. im adding notification sounds for the earthquake panel, but its not set up yet. when it is, youll be able to turn off the notification sounds.
- theres themes!! you cant customise them yourself or anything but there are in fact themes
some info on content selection
- as a giant nerd, some of the feed options may seem weirdly specific and you may have no interest in them. thats fine, just dont use them!! i like seismology, linguistics, and tornado stuff, so i have/plan on adding things that i find interesting. if youve got something specific youd like to see added, feel free to send a suggestion, and i may add it if i can find resources that work!!
- it should unfortunately go without saying that news feeds can at any time contain negative content, so if you want to escape from that stuff for a while, again, just switch to different feeds. i will try to add custom news feeds with more specific (and less depressing) info if i can, but sadly rss is mostly phased out, so i have less options since thats the only thing i know how to do right now. again, feel free to suggest stuff.
- i have a few manually updated feeds which you can take a look at too!! anything with 'of the now' is curated stuff that i manually update whenever i feel like it. ill pretty much just add random options and update them from time to time.
news feed info
- the world news feed is comprised of bbc news, sky news, new york times, and un global news feeds via rss.
earthquake info
- the earthquake feed is a (more or less) realtime feed using the emsc websocket. you can find out more about the info displayed at the link.
- the feed filters out anything that is created or updated more than 20 minutes ago, and it wont show anything smaller than m2.5. m5-m6, m6-m7, and m7+ show up in highlighted colours (green, yellow, and red for most themes) and play different alerts if you have notification sounds on.
- some items may be duplicates as my feed doesnt currently distinguish between created and updated items; just check timestamps and if theyre for the same place and around the same time, its almost definitely just an update.
- dont know anything about earthquakes but want to watch the feed anyway?? just remember not to freak out!! its really easy to think things seem way more dramatic than they actually are if youre new to this stuff. for more detailed info, you can check the usgs or emsc websites. i also recommend the globalquake stream if youre interested in talking to people, just make sure to listen to what the channel mods say, and not randoms who go in there just to freak people out lol.
credits
- credit to bfxr for the notification sounds; its a cool site that lets you make 8bit style sfx
